ABOUT US

The story of Judith Rodriguez Menendez

The story of Judith Rodríguez is a story of courage, improvement and passion. Let me weave your experiences into words:

Once upon a time there was a young girl named Judith, whose heart beat to the rhythm of fencing. From an early age, he immersed himself in the world of swords and dueling, finding his refuge and passion in the foil and the epee. The training rooms resonated with her graceful, precise movements, and her determination led her to win national championships and represent Spain in international competitions.

But life sometimes takes unexpected paths. On a sunny day in June, fate turned its board. A car accident left Judith fighting for her life. The right leg, previously agile and strong, was amputated. His right arm also suffered irreparable damage. The world became blurry and confusing, and the question echoed in his mind: “How was I going to rebuild my life?”

Fencing, his great love, seemed unattainable. But Judith didn't give up. He held on to his indomitable spirit and found a new path: wheelchair fencing. With determination and courage, he learned to wield the sword from his new perspective. The wheelchair became his battle companion, and the foil his extension of will.

On the slopes, Judith showed that adversity could not defeat her. He won medals in European competitions, his sword cutting through the air like a ray of hope. Tears of pain and frustration mixed with those of joy and triumph. Each blow was an affirmation of his inner strength.

The community embraced her. Other adaptive athletes became his allies and friends. Together, they shared laughter, sweat and dreams. Judith became a beacon of inspiration for those facing similar obstacles. His story spread beyond the fencing rings, touching the hearts of those who needed to be reminded that life, even with its scars, could still be beautiful.

And so, Judith Rodríguez became a symbol of resilience. His sword, now an extension of his soul, cut through limitations and challenges. In every move, in every stop, in every round, she demonstrated that passion and determination could take us beyond our own expectations.

May Judith's story inspire us to face our own obstacles with courage and find new ways to succeed. 🤺💪

09.03.2024.-BRONZE FOR JUDITH RODRIGUEZ IN THE EUROPEAN WHEELCHAIR FOIL CHAMPIONSHIPS IN PARIS-DOUBLE BRONZE

He has made history in Spanish fencing with the individual bronze double achieved in this European competition.

It is the first time that a shooter from the national team has won a double individual medal in a European Championship.

Judith Rodriguez Menendez won the bronze medal this afternoon at the Halles George Carpentier in Paris.

She lost in the semifinal fifteen to eleven against the 37-year-old Hungarian Eva Hajmasi, who would ultimately win the continental title. Her rival was the current European champion of the category, having in her record, among other results, three Olympic medals, one World championship and four European championships.

The assault was very even, and the woman from Vigo began taking the initiative, but her nerves played tricks on her. He left early four times and was shown four red cards with the corresponding points that went up to Hajmasi's locker. This circumstance was fundamental in the development of the match and the final result. In this way, the Magyar team overcame the biggest obstacle to retain its title and later defeated the Italian Mogos 15-9 in the final.

In the pool phase she obtained 3V-1D. In the round of 16 she defeated the Frenchwoman Clemence Delavoipiere 15-4.

In the quarterfinals and after a great assault, she won by a resounding 15-3 against the experienced Italian legend Loredana Triglia.

In any case, Judith has made history in Spanish wheelchair fencing. Let us remember that last Tuesday he obtained another bronze in the epee category.

It is the first time that a shooter from the national team has won a double individual medal in a European Championship.

Let us remember that his first medal in a European competition was a bronze in epee at the 2022 European Championship in Warsaw, which was already a milestone at that time.

Excellent level demonstrated by Rodríguez this week in Paris, which already confirms her as one of the greats of world Paralympic fencing.

Next April 15 will mark two years since his international debut, which culminated with a gold medal at the Sao Paulo World Cup. Promising path to follow, as it is still in the learning phase and the room for improvement is still very large.

He is currently ranked fourth in the world in épée and fifth in the world in foil.

The options to go to the Paris 2024 JJPP go through the sword weapon and the city of Sao Paulo in May of this year.

He began by dominating the assault, but his rival achieved a 5-5 tie, and from that moment on he made use of his experience and better fencing to win.

Previously, in the quarterfinals, the woman from Vigo, after a great assault, defeated the current number one in saber in the world, the Polish Kinga Drozdz by a score of fifteen touches to nine.

In the round of 16 she easily got rid of the Frenchwoman Enora Tarju 15-3. Due to her status as the number three seed, Judith was exempt from playing the "poules" phase.

With this result he revalidates the bronze medal obtained at the European Championship in Warsaw 2022. It is already his sixth international medal, while two years have not yet passed since he entered the IWAS circuit.

Despite this result, he maintains 6th place in the IWAS World Foil ranking.

The Chinese fencers seem to play in another league and the final podium of the competition would be taken by the three participating Chinese and one Hungarian.

    12.07/2023🤺♿️Cup 🏆 of the World 🌎 of Naon Ratchasima-Thailand.🇹🇭

Judith Rodríguez achieves the 𝐓𝐨𝐩 𝟏𝟎 in this powerful test held today in Asian lands.

Due to her status as number six in the world, she was exempt from the "poules" phase.

On the board of 32 she faced the Brazilian 🇧🇷Carminha Oliveira, whom she won by ✅15-7.

Luck eluded him in his round of 16 crossing and put her on his way to one of the hidden players in the draw, the Chinese 🇨🇳Yuandong Chen. The round started even at 6-6 and went to halftime with 8-6 in favor of the Asian. In the resumption, Chen's speed, technique and quality prevailed and defeated ours by ❌ 7-15. This is how she took revenge for the defeat in the quarterfinals against Judith in epee, during the last World Championship in Terni.

The three Chinese fencers present today are camouflaged in the ranking, but their real position is in the World Top 4. No one has beaten a Chinese woman in foil since her emergence on the international circuit this year. Since the Tokyo JJPP they had not left China to compete and they did so with the imminence of Paris 2024.

At the moment in foil they are inaccessible to the rest of the world, although Judith is one of the few who can cope. In fact, on today's podium the first three places were taken by China🇨🇳, with Chen being the Runner-up.

As an example, this is the history of the last six months of Judith Yuandong Chen's Executioner Today:

Bronze Medals at the Terni World Cup in Foil and Epee. 2023 Asian champion in epee and runner-up in foil and saber. Warsaw Sword World Cup Champion. Runner-up in epee and bronze in foil at the Pisa World Cup.

Good competition carried out by the galician, which consolidates her within the world elite of this sport, number 6 in the world in foil, despite having only been on the IWAS Wheelchair Fencing circuit for a year and a half.

The next international event will be the Cardiff-Wales World Cup, which will take place in mid-January 2024.

IWAS Wheelchair Fencing World Championship Terni-Italy. 5th in epee and 8th in foil

05.10.2023-Epee-Judith Rodríguez missed two medal options and finishes fifth of the World Cup that was held in transalpine lands.. Bittersweet taste for the woman from Vigo who had a magnificent competition.

Exempt from the frame of 64, because she is number five in the world ranking, she began the test by beating the Brazilian 🇧🇷 Carminha Oliveira in the frame of 32 by 15-8.

In the round of 16 she would do the same, defeating the Israeli 🇮🇱Linon Kelmar 15-7.

Already in the quarterfinals, she would surprise by beating one of the favorites, the Chinese 🇨🇳 Chen Yuandong, by thirteen wins to eleven.

Later in the semifinals, where gold or silver was at stake, she was defeated 15-7 by the Rio 2016 Paralympic champion Xufeng Zou of China 🇨🇳. The Asian would ultimately be the winner of this World Championship.

The innovative formula of the competition included the repechage from the board of 16, which is why Judith had to fight for the bronze medal against the number one in the world who came from the repechage, the Polish 🇵🇱Marta Fidrych. The round was very close, with both athletes alternating on the scoreboard. After 12-12, the Pole made it 12-14, but the Spanish equalized again (14-14). At the decisive point Fidrych was accurate and fast to take the victory. Our shooter was once again at the doorstep of the medals.

In any case, very good IWAS points that allow her to remain number four in the world.

It is the best result of a Spaniard in a World Championship from the fourth place achieved by Daniel Lamata in 𝟏𝟗𝟗𝟖. In just two seasons competing, Judith has one gold 🥇 and three bronzes 🥉 in World Cups, one European bronze 🥉 and two golds 🥇 in international satellite tournaments.

07.10.2023-Foil-🔝 8 for Judith Rodríguez Menéndez in her debut in a World Championship using the foil.

Judith, due to her status as world No. 6, was exempt from the first round of the 64-man draw.

Already in the 32nd frame she clearly got rid of the Brazilian Carminha Oliveira 🇧🇷 by a resounding 15-1.

In the round of 16 after an initially even round, he managed to beat Pui Shan Fan from Hong Kong 🇭🇰 by 15-12.

In the quarterfinals she faced the Hungarian 🇭🇺Eva Hajmasi, No. 3 in the world, and despite being tied at the beginning, the Magyar's experience and good fencing would allow her to defeat the Vigo player 15-9.

Later in the first round of the repechage that faced the Hungarian 🇭🇺Anna Nadasdy, she would come back from a 1-6 start, to end up winning the match by fifteen to seven.

Her last round of the championship, where she was playing to fight for the bronze medal 🥉, she lost to the current Olympic runner-up in Tokyo 2020, the Ukrainian 🇺🇦Nataliia Morkwich by 15-10. Judith came to lead by 9-6, but in the end he gave in to the push of his rival.

It should be noted that those classified from fifth to eighth place, both included, take the same number of points in this world championship.

Excellent competition from Judith with that eighth final place, which allows her to obtain a good handful of IWAS points in her race towards Paris 2024 and ascend to the number 6 in the world in foil.

Judith places 5th in Epee and 6th in Foil at World Cup BUSAN-Korea.

Now it's time to reset to face the most important event of the year, the World Championship in Terni-Italy 🇮🇹 which will be held from October 3 to 8.

7 and 08.07.203.- 🤺♿️ World Cup Women's foil and epee wheelchair fencing in Warsaw-Poland

Judith Rodríguez was unlucky and fell short of medals on two occasions.

The Vigo shooter could not touch metal this weekend in Polish lands. In both foil and épée she fell in the quarterfinals that gave her access to the podium.

On Friday the foil test took place and she was unable to compete against the living legend of world Paralympic fencing and current world number two Yu Chui Lee from Hong Kong, with 7 Paralympic golds in her sights. After an even start to the round up to 6-6, the Asian imposed her quality and experience against the Spanish and defeated her 15-6.

Gold and silver went to China and the bronzes traveled to Hong Kong and Italy. With this performance and the eighth place achieved, Judith consolidates herself among the world elite of wheelchair foil and advances in the IWAS rankings. Her goal is Paris 2024. At this moment she is already number nine in the world in foil.

Previously, being exempt from "poules" due to her status as a world top 10 player, she defeated Britain's Emily Holder 15-3 in the round of 32. Already in the round of 16 and after an excellent round she beat the Italian Loredana Triglia, world number 7, by a clear 15-6.

On Saturday it was the epee's turn, achieving sixth place at the end of the competition.

This time she could not beat the Hungarian Amarilla Veres, Paralympic champion in Tokyo 2021 and current number one in the world, losing in the quarterfinals by 15-13, and was left on the doorstep of the medals. A very even and exciting assault followed with great interest by the entire public present at the sports venue. We remember that it is the fourth confrontation between the two in the last seven months, now being the “head to head” of two victories for each one.

Because it was among the top 10 in the world ranking, IWAS was also exempt from passing the “poules” phase.

In the round of 32 she previously defeated Turkey's Elke Lale Van Achterberg 15-10. Then in the round of 16 she won 15-8 against the Brazilian Rayssa Veras.

Good IWAS points for the Paris 2024 Paralympic ranking, which although they keep her in fourth place in the epee, allow him to close the gap and be just seven points behind third.

With these results, the woman from Vigo consolidates herself among the world elite of wheelchair fencing, only fifteen months after her debut on the international circuit.

Their next appointment will be at the beginning of September at the Korea World Cup to be held in the city of Busan.

Judith Rodríguez explains in the Paralympic TV program "This is Paralympic fencing"

02.06.2023.-Although sword fighting dates back thousands of years, the sport of fencing as we know it today comes from the 19th century. The wheelchair modality was developed by the precursor of the Paralympic Games, Sir Ludwig Guttman, in Stoke Mandeville, where British soldiers wounded in World War II were rehabilitated. Fencing is a combination of strength, speed, technique and tactics. The shooters compete strapped to wheelchairs, which in turn are anchored to the ground, giving them greater freedom of movement in the trunk and upper body.

I have looked good on the court "But this is another step in my daily work, which can be seen to be bearing fruit. I see that I am at the level of the best shooters in the world and this encourages me to train more and better."

April 12,2023.-This time, I would like to talk not only about myself, but also about two girls who are sponsored by Scuderia Ramilo. They do not participate in rally-raids, but they have great spirit. Judith Rodriguez is attempting to score points for the Olympics in Paris 24 this year. Last week, she became the Spanish champion, and she continues to accumulate points in the World Cup and the European Championship to see if we can get her to the Paralympic Games in adapted fencing or wheelchair fencing. She had an accident a few years ago where she lost a leg, and since then she has started a new chapter with wheelchair fencing. She used to be one of the best in Spain in standard fencing. We are very happy that Parabaja is now a part of the Extremadura Baja, and we wish all Parabaja participants good luck! .

Our other female driver, Marta Visa Carol, has competed in the World Catalog and the Kaele World Cup, downhill skiing, where she has achieved a new record of 203.8 km/h, a Spanish record and fifth in the world. She is the 23rd woman to surpass 200 km/h.

These are two girls who have incredible courage.

I have felt comfortable on the court and many things have come out that we have worked on in the room and that is very important for the following competitions.

What I want most is to continue seeing how my fencing evolves every time I compete so I can reach my best version as a fencer and face the tests at the highest level and try to achieve the best results to be at the top and fulfill the dream of going to the Paralympic Games. of Paris 2024.

There are many months of work ahead to prepare for all the competitions, but also a lot of desire to continue working to go a little further every day in both foil and épée. We know that the international level is very high and I can keep myself among the first in the ranking. It is very difficult and involves a lot of sacrifice and work, but we are striving every day to be among the best.”

Judith's bronze at IWAS World Cup Epee Washington-USA

With this, he reaches 4th place in the world in the Pre-Olympic Sword Ranking.

01/16/2023.-In the event held at the National Conference Center in the American capital, the woman from Vigo once again achieved an excellent result.

She failed in the semifinals against the Korean Hyo Kyeong Kwon, her rival in the final in Sao Paulo, and was defeated 9-15.

Before, in the quarterfinals, she gave the big surprise of the competition by defeating the Hungarian Amarilla Veres, current Olympic champion and No. 1 in the IWAS World Ranking, 15-13. In this way she secured the medal and took a small revenge for the semi-finals of the European fencing competition in December last year, where the Magyar was proclaimed champion by defeating Judith in the semi-finals.

In the "poules" phase he obtained a total of five victories. The results were 5-4 with Delavoipere (FRA), 5-4 against Amber Briar (CAN), 5-3 against Victoria A. Isaacson (USA), 5-3 against Emily Holder (GBR) and 5-2 against Patricia Dykes .(USES).

For this reason, she was exempt from the draw of 32. Already in the round of 16, she beat Frenchwoman Cassiopee Bourgine by 15 to 12.

With this result and the points obtained, Judith is placed at number 4 in the pre-Olympic ranking for Paris 2024 in the sword weapon.

With the top six in the ranking out of this initial fight, Judith entered the qualifying rounds as the eleventh favorite.

However, the painting did not benefit him at all. Karjnyak is ranked seventh in the world and was a very tough nut to crack. The defeat left Judith in eleventh place in the final of a World Cup event in which the first favorite, Hong Kong's Chui Yee Yu, won, who had been the Hungarian's executioner in the semifinals (15-8).

I'm Judith Rodriguez; Yes, that fencer who had a traffic accident returning from a competition. On June 10, 2018, I almost lost my life in that accident returning from the Spanish Fencing Championships. As a result of that tragic accident, I lost my right leg and suffered various fractures and injuries to my arm. The sadness made me think that my life was over. It was a long time of physical and mental rehabilitation; The hardest part . Before that day I had it all: I was part of the Spanish fencing team, a teacher and happy. Fencing brought me many medals and many joys. One of the things that was most difficult for me to assimilate was knowing that I was never going to experience that again or anything like it. But as I said back then: “The day I stop smiling I won't be here” and I can only say that I'm still here. I have formed a new life thanks to my friends, my family and all the people who made me feel an immense desire to continue in this fight. In 2020 I decided to try wheelchair fencing, I realized that I couldn't live without this sport. And today I have several medals in this modality, I have won a World Cup in epee in Sao Paulo, a bronze medal in foil in the World Cup in Warsaw and a new life that I am willing to live with enthusiasm and continue. laughing day after day.

Judith Rodriguez Fencing. Mention in Iberdrola League Final

In the live broadcast of the final of the Iberdrola League held on June 24, 2022 between Esgrima Vigo El Olivo and Cardenal Cisneros of Madrid, a commentator made a mistake.

When presenting the shooters and due to the routine of previous years, he named Judith as one of the members of the team. Having participated in those finals for so many years, this mistake is logical.

All this gave the opportunity to explain Judith's evolution and her transition from foot fencing to wheelchair fencing.

    Judith Rodriguez, ask for step.

Judith Rodríguez is close to medals at the World Cup in Thailand

His intelligence, talent, work, perseverance and ambition have allowed him to break into the elite of wheelchair fencing. Judith Rodríguez has returned the enthusiasm to this discipline in Spain, she is its new reference and is destined to mark an era of success. In his international debut he won gold at the Sao Paulo World Cup, ending a 12-year Spanish drought without a medal. In his second competition, in Thailand, he fell short of the podium.

The woman from Vigo was fifth in epee, just shy of the medals after falling in the quarterfinals in a very close round. She signed a total of victories in the pool after beating the British Emily Holder (5-1), the Israeli Linor Kelman (5-3), the Thai Suthin Sita (5-0), the Korean Seung Ri Shin ( 5-0) and the Polish Marta Fidrych (5-3), who would ultimately win the gold. In the round of 16 she beat the Thai again (15-11) and in the quarterfinals she had to face one of the toughest rivals, the Hong Konger Chui Yee Yu.

The Spanish shooter came out without complexes and was always ahead on the scoreboard against the Asian, several times world champion and with 11 Paralympic medals - eight gold - in her record. With 13-12 in favor of Judith, the fencer from Hong Kong showed off her experience to make a strategic stop that helped her come back (14-15). The Galician left with a bittersweet taste because she considered that her level was ready to reach the podium. The points obtained in Chon Buri (Thailand) place her as number two in the world ranking in epee.

And in foil, the modality she handles best and in which she has been proclaimed Spanish champion this year, she has also been one round away from securing a medal.

She beat the Frenchwoman Brianna Vide (5-3), the Indian Anita Ramdhan Chavan (5-1) and the Thai Apinya Thongdaeng (5-0) in the pool, and was defeated by Chui Yee Yu and the South Korean Hyo Kyeong Kwon. She went directly to the board of 16, where she beat the Georgian Gvantsa Zadishvili (15-3), but in the quarterfinals Kwon crossed her path again (15-10), to finish in eighth position. Good feelings have been left by Judith Rodríguez, who will have another opportunity in June at the Satellite World Cup in Klagenfurt (Austria).

In the pool phase he obtained 5V-0D, with partials of 5-0;5-0.5-1.5-3 and 5-3, which allowed him to go as number 1 to the direct ones with a coefficient of 18.

In the Round of 16 she defeated Thailand's SITA Suthin 15-11.

In the round to enter the medals she had to face the strongest of the competitors, YU Chui Yee from Hong Kong, who did not make a good pull and therefore the bad crossing of ours.

In a very close round in which Judith was always ahead on the scoreboard, it reached 13-12, but an unexpected stoppage cut off our pace. Finally, the living legend of world Paralympic fencing defeated her 15- 14.

YU Chui Yee's resume is worth highlighting, with multiple World Championships and 11 medals obtained in the Paralympic Games, 8 of them gold.

    A long-distance race......with destiny

A visibly emotional Judith after beating the Korean in the final said she was extremely happy: “It has been a long job since I had the accident until now and I am living one of the great days of my life.” The woman from Vigo recognized that the final had been very complicated and that it was essential to maintain calm after they reached thirteen tied: “At that moment, when I got fourteen, I was clear that I could no longer fail, and I made the attack movement very well” . The woman from Vigo did not forget to thank everyone who had helped her on that trip: “To my family, my friends, teacher Mariño, my club mates, the coach and my teammate Begoña who has been here by my side supporting me.” The Viguesa had the Spanish anthem played in Sao Paulo in an especially intense moment for her and for Spanish fencing. Four years ago Judith suffered the amputation of her right leg after a traffic accident. That day began a new section of his sports career that yesterday saw its first great episode. It won't be the last. The Paris Paralympic Games are already in his head and, in view of their results, they are getting closer and closer.
